Oh say can you see, my eyes if you can (then my hair’s too short…)*

*Bonus points if you know where the title is from!

Lately, I’ve been sorting through some old pictures, and I think I know the reason I’ve been troubled by big, hairy monsters in my nightmares.

Welcome to the early to mid 1990s, my friends…

I do remember this being the style – honest! Now I just wonder how much money I really spent on hairspray. (We could really use that money for gas, now…)

I remember my mom and aunt warning me that my hair may be out-of-style someday, and my senior picture will seem really dated, but I didn’t believe them. I was styling with my curls, and my green off-the-shoulder sweater, with colorful leggings.

I grew and grew that hair, faithfully getting perms every six months, so I could keep my curls. The spiral perms wouldn’t hold in my hair, so we mimicked that style by using the tiny blue perming rods. (If anyone has had a perm, you’ll recognize those as one of the smallest curls you can get…)

Gradually my hair length and, um, girth??? began to decrease, but still – I look like a relative of Cousin It.

Lesson learned: If big hair comes back, just say no, no, no, no, no… I still wonder what would have happened if a spark had gotten too close to my hair at any time…

Aqua net was cheap, at least back then it was! ;)

LOL.. it was the fashion back in the day! I on the other had had naturally curly hair and therefore – I had a FRO. It wasn’t popular back then – in spite of the big perms – and I was tormented something fierce. Strange how things are…!

I kinda like the hair with the dog… I think that picture is great!

thanks for stopping by and leaving your opinion – I agree with you!

Wow. Um, that’s some big hair. The kind that should, by rights, escape and try to smother you in your sleep. ;) I could never get my hair that long and big, and shortly after starting college I cut it all off. Shaved in the back short. :)

Need to add – yes Aquanet was $.99/can at Shopko back in the day. ;-) Scary that I know that…

Bring on the big hair bands and the trip to the memory lane will be complete.

Perms every 6 months, Aqua net, yes, I do believe I remember those. Would you die of shock if I told you I still have my hot-roller set? The ones I used to get my hair through those between-perm times. My hair wasn’t as big as yours, but I did love my perms. :D

I’m backing the aqua net claim. I heard they are doing recent renovations to the high school I attended. $1 mill. alone to chisel the hair spray off the girl’s lavatory walls. I graduated in 1988 and had the hair as well.

I remember the aqua net days! *lol* (I graduated in ’89), though I never had BIG hair… At least not as big as my sisters. ;)

I think you look great! I loved the 80s and early 90s!

I did the perm once..didn’t hold. But, I was also a big fan of the “crimping iron.” Oh yeah, Baby!

I like the hair in the last picture too. Curly, yes, but not really big.

If memory serves, your post title is from the song, ‘Hair’, from the musical ‘Hair’, the album of which I played constantly and memorized back in 1968.

“Hair, hair, hair, hair, hair, hair, hair
    Flow it, show it
Long as God can grow it
    My hair”

i personally LOVE your hair in the last pictures. i tried having perms all the time, but my hair just doesn’t hold them well. i used to have some really weird bangs though. i don’t know what my mother was thinking when i was little little.

Thanks for sending me this link. The prom dress DOES look pretty. I can understand saving the prom dress. I saved one of mine for quite awhile.
