Soaked Cell Phone

July 27, 2008

Just a quick note to say my cell phone survived the shower/bath it received yesterday, so I’m breathing a sigh of relief.

The phone got soaked due to a small mishap with the sprinkler action on a kiddie pool we received for Little Dude.

The kiddie pool box showed the sprinkler lightly raining on the pool. Even with the hose barely turned on, the picture on the box is nowhere near what actually happens.

My phone, which was sitting on a table with our other items in the shade, got soaked. The table, being a small, decorative, outdoor table, is slightly warped from the weather, so my phone was sitting in a nice puddle, besides being rained on, when I realized what had happened.

That ended some of my outdoor enjoyment, but I’m happy it appears to have survived with all features intact.

Last night, the Hubby made a few homemade pizzas (including a dairy-free version for Little Dude), and as he pulled his totally loaded pizza from the oven, the toppings slid, which caused the pan to tip, sending pizza all over the inside of the oven. He was less than thrilled, not only because he was looking forward to pizza, but because of the lovely pizza mess. He and his nephew cleaned the coated oven while I finished Little Dude’s nighttime routine – there was a lot of colorful language occurring in our kitchen.

As they were cleaning out the oven (and dumping the burned “pizza goo” down the garbage disposal), the garbage disposal suddenly made a horrid noise and then there was nothing. More colorful language ensued as the Hubby dissected the disposal, finally extracting something that looks suspiciously like a mutilated coin. Happily the disposal now works again. Thank goodness!

Despite the few set-backs during the afternoon and evening, we (the Hubby, his nephew and I) finished our day playing Scrabble around the dining room table, where I happily continued my reign as champion.

Today has been a day of rest and finishing up the weekend to-do list. With the great weather and times we’ve enjoyed overall, I wish we could spread the weekend into one more day.

Eventful weekend at your house, eh? :D And I only broke the knob on my 14 year old stove. I feel so inadequate. ;)

I have a non revivable disposal ~ died this evening and nothing is stuck in it

next time you get your phone wet try this:
    http://helpfulvideo.com/video/show/579/dry-out-a-wet-cell-phone-with-rice.html

if you aren’t a link clicker… take phone apart quickly, pull out battery, sim card if yours has one, towel dry and then put all of the parts in a Tupperware container with rice (uncooked) for a day or two. More times than not it will extract and absorb the water and your phone will work… your cell provider will be able to see there has been water damage (they have moisture sensors) and that voids the standard warranties, but it will get you up and running until your next upgrade.

I would second all of what mylucidkarma said.

I would just add that if you have any of those “Silca Gell” Packets that come in with most electronics they can be very effective too.

MLK is right about them voiding the waranty too … there is usually a strip behind the battery that turns pink when submersed (you would be surprised how many phones get lost down the toilet)

    Good luck

What an evening!!! … There would have been colorful language here too, and Joe would have been UNBEARABLE for the rest of the day.

Must have been one of those weekends … something in the Cosmos! A few mishaps… lotsa colourful language… and voila… its already Monday!!!

    Glad your phone is OK.
Wish they’d make them a little more waterproof!

    on my goodness!!!!!

i am the queen of klutzes! it sounds like you had what i would call a stormy day…..lol….at one point, you just have to through your hands up, have a chuckle and defer to tomorrow.

tomorrow will be a better day….lol

a friend of mine once lost his cell phone to a great glass of red wine. next one to a sink full of soapy water…….worst part, he ruined a great glass of red wine…..

on the upside, no red wine was lost in the cell phone incident or the pizza incident or the final garbage disposal incident and you got it all over with in a quick spurt of three…..

When it rains it pours, eh? Oh, pardon the water reference *smile* My theory is that electrical items send out communication waves to their electrical item friends and relations. The cell phone emits a single to the oven to say “She got me wet!” The oven supports the phone by causing the pizza to slide. But the oven wasn’t thinking it all out, and got itself all gooey, which it is not happy about. So, it sends a signal to the disposal unit to say “He got me all gooey!” And the disposal unit swallows a coin and seizes up. Eventually, they get tired of the game, and all returns to normal.

Hey everyone, I have encountered a similar problem. I left my phone by the sink in my kitchen and when I came back for it, and turned it on, it could not find any signal. I looked at the battery and realized that the normally white strip had turned purple. i blowdried it, let it sit for 5 days, and as i had read, put it in the oven for 5 hours. no luck… i’m returning it today to see if they can give me another one considering it wasn’t my fault at the least. any ideas for how i’m gonna replace the strip :P ?
