Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease – The Continuing Saga
Just when you thought it was safe, and that you once again can show off your hands and feet, it happens – the final blow of Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease.
My fingernails are peeling off, from the base (or the sterile matrix, as I guess the nail bed is called). Not all of them – so far only one, in fact, but two others are showing signs that they might do the same thing, and I’m keeping a close eye on Little Dude’s nails as well.
I was pretty certain I didn’t have a nail fungus and that I didn’t damage my nail in an accident, so I kind-of wondered about Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease being the issue when I started to notice the slight difference and peeling of my one nail. Not wanting to skew my results, I googled the following term – “nail peeling up from the base,” and was not too surprised when I landed on this:
Answer 1 out of 4
“Was he sick recently? When the kids are sick, their nails stop growing. When they are over the sickness, the nails grow again and it is not unusual for the nails and toes (check the toe nail beds) to slough and look like they’re peeling when they grow again. My son goes to daycare and they all just got over hand-foot-mouth disease. His nails and two big toes were peeling. Ped said let’s just watch it, but then I heard ALL the kids in his room has peeling nailbeds. So i called my daughter’s ped dermatologist and that’s what he told me. Hope that helps. I thought he smashed his fingers too. but the toe nails ruled that out.”
The two people discussing this matter go on to discuss, yes, the child did have Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease. (Please click over to read more.) And this wasn’t the only listing I found for my google search. It appears this is a common reaction to the disease, which once again, mostly occurs in children.
I thought I felt disgusted by all the peeling skin Little Dude and I have been experiencing, due to where the blisters were located. This is much grosser.
Ugh.
Please tell me this is finally the end of this disgusting disease (and I’m so hoping Little Dude doesn’t lose any of his nails)!

Goodness gracious greatballs of fire! What’s next? I do hope that Little Dude doesn’t pull of “The Fly” thing.
Uhg! Man, I hope you get over that disease SOON… It just doesn’t sound pleasant at all. *sigh*
Geez….just when you think it’s over, BAM! Hope you’re finally done with all of this!
Ew ew ewwwwwww!!!!!
Once this is done and over, you are sooo going for a super-deluxe mani/pedi. You’ll have it coming!
Yuck, yuck, YUCK!! Hope it is over with soon, and may you never suffer from it again.
This doesn’t sound like any fun at all. I hope it clears up soon and when it does you need to treat yourself and Little Dude to something special.
I lost nails before… but this – dear lawd woman…
Deep breathe… really deep breathe… it could be way worst I suppose! What does Little Dude’s pediatrician say about all this??
Is this it?? Are you done with that terrible disease??? What the hell is that disease anyhow?
Deep breathe… seriously… you can do this!
I had a high fever on 1 July. The next day blisters in my mouth. The third day I had blisters appear on my hands and by the end of the third day, on my feet. Gads, it was the most horrid week of my life, in constant pain.
I loved the peeling that occurred after. Oh, and now? I have 3 blisters appearing on my hands today. Can this possibly recur?
Pux never did get it…the little rascal just brought it home to me.
I know you can can get another strain of HFM, Pux Momma, but I haven’t heard of it recurring like that.
Maybe some of the blisters are just coming to the surface, as I know that is how mine have looked with some of the peeling.
Take care and thanks for stopping by!
Ha, this is so funny to me… My kids never got this ailment, but hey at least you don’t have to worry about chicken pox anymore! My poor little girl (now age 22) got the chicken pox twice, and shingles once!
Somehow, we all SURVIVE; including Mom and Dad!
lol–i have this going on too. somehow i contracted HF&M disease along with my 3 year old and 3 month old. now it’s a month later and we ALL have peeling fingernails (from the bottom, starts off discolored brownish). so it is 100% the disease.
So sorry you are going through this. Just know that it does get better.
Thank you so much for posting this. I diagnosed myself with hand foot and mouth disease but it is rarely mentioned about the peeling skin and peeling nails afterwards. I hope this scourge will be done soon! Did you find anything other than cuticle oil to be helpful? Is this the last stage of HFMD? Again thank you!
Hi Eva – I’m so glad this has been helpful! I think the peeling is the last stage, as my son and I didn’t experience anything after that stage, from what I remember. As for how I handled it, I made certain to keep any of the peeling areas extra clean and trimmed, to avoid infection or aggravating the peeling even more. I did use cuticle oil/lotion, but not too much. Good luck!
