Cars Obsession

January 29, 2009

We have an obsession in our household. Maybe it could be called an addiction.

carsWe LOVE Cars. More specifically, Little Dude loves Cars. (Surprise, surprise – Little Dude has many people in his life obsessed with Disney, and his first love is one of their movies.)

I would love to tell you I have been the perfect parent, never allowing my toddler to view television. Yes, I would love to be able to make you believe that is true. Alas, I’m far from perfect.

My child is so in love with the movie, we probably view the movie, or portions of the movie, four to seven times per week. And it is usually because Little Dude is relentlessly requesting to see it.

For his second birthday, Little Dude received two packs of Cars’ cars from us, his wonderful parents, which I used to decorate and surround his birthday cake. These cars have been played with non-stop. They even “sleep” in Little Dude’s room at night, on one of his bookshelves, or on his window sill – he lets us know where they need to be each night.

In the past few weeks, Little Dude has received several more of the Cars gang, since the first two sets were mostly plastic and not as durable (he already broke the tow hook on Tow Mater, as well as the forks on Guido, for those of you who know your characters).

He now owns four Lightning McQueens (original plastic one from us, a new die-cast one for pooping on the potty, and two other versions he received as gifts), three Tow Maters (the original plastic one from us, one that came in a helicopter as a gift, plus a die-cast one), two Ramones, and then one each of Lizzie, Flo, Sally, Guido, Luigi, Sarge (he actually has two Sarge jeeps, but his original one mysteriously disappeared, so his grandma decided he needed a new one), Mack, Fillmore, Chick Hicks, the King, Doc and one of the tractors.

The only problem with this obsession is when we have to leave the house. Either we bring a bunch of “the guys” with us, or we have a small battle on our hands.

Sometimes he is fine kissing them all good-bye, but more often than not, Little Dude wants a few of them with him at all times.

So today, as I went about my day, I was carrying a Lightning McQueen in my pocket and purse. Lightning tearfully was placed in my care once Little Dude reached school this morning. Little Dude was fine after a few moments, and Lightning has made me smile all day as I’ve taken care of him as promised.

How can you not smile when you see this peeking out of your purse? Especially when you think of the little boy who owns him.

I love the movie Cars. :) … We have some Cars cars from McDonald’s, but the boys have outgrown them, so they just sit in a bucket. *lol*

When Jared was Little Dude’s age, he was OBSESSED with Toy Story. It was Buzz and Woody all the way! *lol* I think he watched that movie EVERY DAY. Josh and Alicia never had an obsession like that, but for Amanda it was all about Nemo. *lol*

We’re big Disney fans too. :D

Look, we even had a cake topper sort of like yours: http://www.flickr.com/photos/mamadrama/3203181052/in/set-72157612611242709/

We’re not there yet, but I think it is so precious that you carried around his car all day. Sweet. :)

i understand. the first born nephew loves cars too. i know mater and lightning quite well. we have played in the basement, the main floor, the backyard, the car, the park, the store, his bedroom………i know you understand.

i figure there is no use fighting it. they grow past this stage so quickly. in there minds they see the roar of the crowds, the swooosh as lightning speeds past and they hear the personality of their four wheeled friend. it is all good.

we also had the phase where the first born would randomly need to stand and express his happy feet — didn’t matter what type of fancy restaurant we were in…..he entertained one and all. i guess when you have feet that happy, you just have to dance.

he also loves trains and dinosaurs…..we have been asked for our tickets and served hot chocolate many a time (polar express) and we have also been given ‘torches’ and stealthily led through the museum to find the dinosaur……

    they have such vivid imaginations.

god bless little boys and their wee toy cars.

JJ loves cars too. But yesterday, we couldn’t find the DVD! It was a tragedy. If I had time, I would have torn the house apart. I will probably have to do that today.

Kind of like C and his Toy Story obsession and B with her Cinderella obsession. Although their obsessions hit about age 3/4. Before that it was the Teletubbies and I’m still traumatized. LOL.

I could have written this post. Too funny these boys!

Julie – I’m glad you found the picture of the cake topper! Yes, it is very much like the one we had. (My nephew was obsessed with Toy Story, so I know all about that obsession, too.)

Andrea – Just be prepared. Your time is coming and all you can ask for is that the obsession is something you can stomach, too.

storm – I wouldn’t fight this stage for a moment. I love that he knows all the cars by name, and that he and I can play with these together. I’m glad you are enjoying this with your nephew.

inthefastlane – Couldn’t find the DVD?!?!?!? Eek! We would have many tears in this household…

mrsvierkant – The Hubby actually made certain he saw Toy Story, since he remembered C’s fascination with that one. It moves too slow for Little Dude’s age, though, so I think Cars is it for now.

Gina – I think of you often when we are discussing Cars in our household, since I imagine you have had many similar discussions. I so wish we could meet. Our boys appear to be so much alike!

I frequently have to take custody of my children’s “little friends”. And they really do make you smile at the most unexpected times.
These kinds of reminders are great.
Lisa has taken to leaving funny messages on my voice mail, to the extent that she is disappointed when I pick up … It is the most wonderful feeling to come out of a meeting and listen to her funny message :D

Wow, I am pretty sure my nephews obsession has gone past that and into something far more than I can imagine. Note he is almost 2 years old. Cars is on the TV in his room at eye level for him from the time he wakes up until he goes to bed. Cars this cars that. It is getting bad. His parents even have painted the characters on his walls. It has come to me not being allowed by his parents to at least put in a different movie because they are afraid he will get upset. Now he is so obsessed with a part in the movie his father just puts that scene on repeat. You dont even want me to begin on his junk food diet.
