Best Mother’s Day Gift Ever

May 11, 2009

The Hubby got me flowers – some to hang on our porch from him, and an indoor arrangement and balloon from Little Dude. Not only that, but he purchased a new, beautiful attache case for my laptop computer, to replace the ratty-looking black case I’ve been using for years. (The new case is sleek. If I use it for conferences or meetings, there is enough room for me to put a portfolio, purse-type items and much more – so I would be carrying one bag, not 50! I will feel so professional!)

On top of all of it, even though it is technically not a gift for Mother’s Day, I finally found a new pair of tennis shoes. I’ve been on the hunt for a good pair of walking shoes for many months now, since my current pair predates my child and pregnancy. The age of the old shoes isn’t a big deal unless I’m walking or standing for long periods of time, in which case, my ankles end up hurting due to lack of support – not a good thing when the Hubby and I are trying to walk a lot more while the weather is ideal. I loved my New Balance shoes, but was talked into trying Nike again. So far I love them, but will have to put them to the test this coming weekend.

These are all great and wonderful things – and way more than I expected, since we are trying to watch the spending within our family. However, the best gift of all came this morning. Little Dude goes to school (day care) twice a week, and his teacher had the kids create a special project for their moms, last week. I received my gift this morning.

Check out my first piece of handmade mom jewelry – a locket pin made from stapled hearts, tin-foil, glitter glue and a laminated picture!

Please excuse the photo quality, as I quickly snapped the pictures and my camera didn’t like the shiny foil/lamination (didn’t have time to mess with the settings), but I’ve determined it is the most beautiful piece of jewelry I own.

Yes, I’m proudly wearing it on my work name badge today. Excuse me while I continue beaming with pride.

Dear Hubby: Your gifts are wonderful, too. I love every one of them, and I love you.

Dear Little Dude: I’m sorry yesterday was so frustrating for both of us. I’m hoping we have many better days this week, and am happy our day began to improve in the evening, and you woke in a sunny fashion this morning. I love you and you are my greatest Mother’s Day gift ever.

So sweet. I was actually just complaining at work tonight that I didn’t get Mother’s Day stuff from either of my boys. :-( I’ve been so happily working away on projects with my daycare kids for their Mommies, knowing how much those little messes of glue and paper and glitter and who knows what else mean to us! I’ve actually been feeling sorry for myself about it. That’s totally allowed on Mother’s Day. Why aren’t they making stuff in school anymore? Weird.

    Happy Belated Mother’s Day,

The locket is priceless (and beautiful). Isn’t it wonderful how something like that can over shadow the other material gifts we get. It reminds me of how instead of overspending on gifts, we would be getter off taking time to make our family and friends a special token of our love.

veredd – Isn’t amazing how quickly a little paper, tin foil, paint and glue can quickly become more valuable than any rare stones or metals?

mrsvierkant – Another idea for you! :-)

reformattingmybrain – That is a bummer. I think as we got older we had to write our own poems at least. I’m surprised none of the teachers did that.

    Barbara – Beautifully said!

Tendrils – Right back at you!

Julie – It is still on my name badge for work!

kweenmama – Trust me, it will be saved (as will the artwork the Hubby got for Father’s Day last year, since Little Dude had just entered school prior to that event).

storm – Love your idea. Still working on timing for me.

I love these things. All of our cars etc are home made (even from the grown-ups). I think our friends think we are crazy.

Bart seems past it now, but nearly once a week I am likely to find a card or drawing from Lisa telling me she loves me and I can tell you now it has still not got old. I will really miss it when she grows out of this stage.
